The purpose of these questions is to foster discussions and conversations within you book club. You can use them as a jumping off point, a cheat sheet for when the conversation lags. It’s up to you.
1. Who Was Your Favorite Character And Why?
Favorite characters are a great conversation starter. Readers often bond over favorite characters making this a great question to get the discussion started.
2. What Was Your Favorite Plot Point?
Plot points help move the story along, but can also make for a lot interesting conversations.
Talk about which ones you loved or didn’t care for.
3. What Do You Think Inspired The Author To Write This Book?
Inspiration is a huge part of the writing process. This is a great way to help your group dive into the story behind the story.
4. Are There Any Prominent Themes In The Book? What Are They And Why Are They Significant?
Themes, intentional or not, are a great to start a conversation about the book. The theme often plays a role in the likeability of the book.
5. What, If Anything, Didn’t You Like About The Book?
Talking about your least favorite things in a book is great way to work out your feelings on the book and get others opinions.
6. If You Could, Is There Anything You Would Change About The Book?
Most of us have wished at some point or another that we change some in a book. Talk about how you would have written the story or anything that you wish was different about this book.
7. How Was The Character Development? Could It Be Better?
Everyone has their own opinion when it come to character development. Some like their characters to have more of a slow-burn development, others like quicker changes.
8. Who Was Your Least Favorite Character and Why?
As much book nerds love to talk about their favorite characters, they love to talk about characters they hate even more.
This question will most likely inspire passionate discussions.
9. What Kinds Of Emotions Did You Feel While Reading This Book?
One of the best parts about reading a book is getting the feels.
Discuss what emotions you felt while reading this book. Did you love it so much that you wanted to hug it or did feel like throwing it across the room?
10. Would Consider Reading Another Book By This Author?
If this author has multiple books out, talk about whether or not you would like to read another one of their books.
11. What Do Think Of The Cover?
It’s okay to be a little vain about the cover. Most readers do in fact judge a book by its cover, so this can make for interesting discussion especially if members have different editions of the book.
12. Would You Ever Consider Reading This Book Again?
One of the best signs that a book is pretty good is wanting to read it again.
Now, there are some people who will absolutely, under no circumstances, reread a book, but generally wanting to reread a book is a good sign.
