What if you lived two lives? What if those lives were 140 years apart? And what if you had to give up one?
This the reality for the main character of Gabrielle Meyer’s When The Day Comes.
Overview
Genre: Historical Fiction/Christian Fiction
Twenty year old Libby has a unique gift, she lives in both 1774 and 1914. Each night when she goes to sleep she wakes up in the other timeline. On her twenty-first birthday she’ll have to choose which timeline she wants to live in.
In 1774 she is the owner of a newspaper in Williamsburg, Virginia on the precipice of the Revolutionary War. In 1914 she is the daughter of a wealthy American businessman and a scheming mother who wants to marry her in the British aristocracy.
Libby thinks she knows where she wants to stay, but as things in both times begin to complicate, she must make a choice that could rip apart everything she thought she wanted.
My Thoughts on When The Day Comes
I decided to read this book after seeing it all over Christian BookTube and I’m glad I did. When the Day Comes has such a unique premise that I really loved.
Meyer’s research is meticulous which makes both timelines so immersing. I actually felt like I was standing alongside Libby in both 1774 and 1914.
Libby is a character that’s easy to root for. She is such a strong, independent woman despite the politics and views of the timelines she lives in. She has a fighting spirit and a love for people that makes her such a compelling character.
As for the side characters, the 1774 cast was my favorite. I feel like the characters in that timeline were so fascinating because it was hard to tell who was a friend and who was an enemy. The backdrop of colonial Williamsburg was amazing. Meyer managed to capture the tension of the time with ease.
In 1914, I liked how Meyer allowed Libby to be independent and make her own choices despite the number of people trying to bend her to their will.
Meyer manages to find a perfect balance and blend of the two years, while still bringing a fresh spin to the genre. I found myself tearing through the book so fast because I couldn’t wait to find out what happens.
Final Thoughts and Rating
I’m so glad that picked up When The Day Comes. It’s such a interesting take on both the historical fiction genre and the time-travel trope.
This book was a perfect summer treat and I can’t wait for the next one.
